The disciples are on the road to Bethany when Joanna sends a surprise package stuffed with valuable items they can sell to support Jesus’ ministry. Spirits are high…until Roman soldiers show up. Under Roman law, the soldiers force the disciples to carry their gear for one mile. And they don’t make it easy. The Romans pile on the mockery, toss out crude jokes, and treat the disciples like pack animals. Every step feels humiliating.
But when the mile marker finally appears and the disciples drop the gear with relief, Jesus keeps walking. The disciples stare at Him, stunned. One mile was required. Two miles was unheard of. Yet Jesus shows them what it looks like to live out His teaching: go the extra mile. Literally.
The Romans are caught off guard. Their mocking dies out. Their posture shifts. Something about this unexpected kindness disarms them. And as the disciples follow Jesus into mile two, they start helping one another shoulder the load. What began as humiliation becomes a lesson in humility.
After all that walking—plus the bonus miles—they finally reach Bethany. Mary comes running out to greet them with pure joy. Inside Mary and Martha’s home, Jesus begins telling the parable of the vineyard workers. Martha is busy serving, rushing around, making sure everything is perfect. Meanwhile, Mary sits at Jesus’ feet, soaking in every word. Martha eventually snaps, frustrated that Mary isn’t helping. But Jesus gently tells her that Mary has chosen the good portion—the one thing that truly matters in that moment.
Then comes the parable itself. It’s a tough one, especially if you’ve ever worked a long, exhausting day. No matter when each worker started—early morning or late afternoon—they all received the same reward: one denarius. The disciples don’t love this. It feels unfair. But that’s the point. God’s grace isn’t fair. And thank goodness it isn’t.
If God were fair, we’d be in trouble. None of us can earn salvation. None of us can work hard enough, behave well enough, or measure up. Grace is unfair in the best possible way. It means Jesus took on what wasn’t His so we could receive what we never deserved. It means God forgives us even when we’ve blown it. It means someone can believe at the start of their life or at the very end and still receive the same salvation. That’s the beauty of grace—it’s given freely, not earned.
