Things are really starting to heat up in this episode. Quintus is absolutely losing it. His precious revenue stream is drying up thanks to the massive tent city outside of town, and he responds the only way Quintus knows how: by storming out the door and barking at anyone within shouting distance. He cannot stand that all these people are gathered for one reason—Jesus.
But Jesus isn’t about to shrink back just because Rome’s most dramatic tax official is having a meltdown. Instead, He steps outside and begins teaching, and the crowd swells instantly. The more Quintus fumes, the more people gather. It’s almost comical.
In the middle of all this tension, Jesus notices a blind man and goes straight to him. The disciples ask the age-old question: who sinned, this man or his parents? Jesus shuts that down immediately. Neither. This man’s blindness is going to become a stage for God’s glory. Then comes the unforgettable moment—Jesus kneels, mixes dirt with His own spit, spreads the mud across the man’s eyes, and suddenly the man can see. The crowd is stunned.
Meanwhile, Ramah and Thomas slip away for a tender moment of their own. Their engagement feels warm and hopeful, and Thomas’ gift—a small clock he worked tirelessly to barter for—is sweet and earnest. Cinnamon cakes for fish for a bookcase for a clock. Only the best gift for Ramah. Their love is gentle, steady, and deeply touching.
But Quintus’ anger finally boils over. He’s shouting, pushing, trying to force his way to Jesus. He wants Him arrested. He wants control. And in his rage, he draws his sword. In the chaos, Ramah is struck. It doesn’t look intentional, but the damage is done. She collapses, and everything stops.
Jesus returns to the scene as Ramah lies dying in Thomas’ arms. Thomas is undone. He’s sobbing, pleading, begging Jesus to heal her. He knows Jesus can do it. He’s seen the miracles. He believes with everything in him. Healing her feels like the obvious answer.
But Jesus doesn’t do it.
He tells Thomas it is not her time. It’s a heartbreaking moment. A moment that hits close to home for every believer who has prayed earnestly and heard silence instead of the answer they longed for. Thomas’ pain is real, and so is ours. Not every prayer is answered the way we hope. It’s one of the hardest realities of following Jesus, yet it’s woven into the fabric of faith.
